The Small Dog in the Rain

She says I’m inconsistent
‘Cause I don’t like getting wet
In bathtubs or in garden grass
That’s been rained on and yet…

I’ll jump into a muddy pool
Or, in torrential rain,
I’ll walk for miles exploring, then
Ask to go out again.

I’ll bound through all the long grass
Holding water in its blades,
And splash in any stream or ditch
By nature or man made.

But let her fill a steaming tub
I’m quickly out of sight
In case it’s me she wants to soap
I’m always poised for flight.

I work hard to be fragrant
To the perfect canine Nose,
It’s not my fault she’s human
With a paltry one of those.

For dogs and whiffy coats, say I,
Go always hand in glove.
She calls me inconsistent,
But I know it’s me she loves.

  1. Yes we all love Ani. Mylo is no lover of water but he’ll stand in the shower and let me use the shower o him if i keep away from his head. Oddly its the fishy breath that’s most off putting even if he rarely eats fish… go figure

  2. Don’t worry, Ani, I get it. My sister had a gorgeous red setter and he was just the same. Being clean is no fun, is it? Those muddy puddles are much more fun… 🙂

  3. Wet and muddy. that’s how dog’s like it, eh Ani? If it’s also smelly, so much the better. Wet and soapy? Ugh! Smells like flowers. Not suitable for a dog. They’re not supposed to smell sweet.

  4. You just know what you like. Personally I like water in any form: muddy puddles, the big water they call the ocean, baths, rain… It’s all good. Although, I do wish they’d quit with the smelly stuff they put on me at bath time. Dogs shouldn’t smell like that. That’s the only part of bath time I hate. Lots of licks, Lilie

  5. I am not wondering about, Ani! You are living a different tradition, the Anlgo-Saxonian, not the Prussian one. 😉 You are not taking orders before getting the honour of an Mylady. Best wishes, Mihael

  6. Well, Ani, I’ve never been bathed, but I do spend a lot of time cleaning myself. I have to keep my long, fluffy coat presentable. I do get brushed regularly – do You? You always look like you’ve just been bathed – with a nice, silky clean coat!

    1. It tickles me how selective they are. Ani fair tiptoes, distastefully, through the short grass in the garden, even in the dew… but will bound through anything, in torrential rain, if she is on a walk…
