Hot dogs

Moving in slow motion,
Reluctant effort spawning sleep
Before midday.
Soporific humming
Through open windows
Signals summer.
Only the flies are happy,
Making friends with flesh
Ensuring wakefulness.
Cloistered madness yawns,
Stretching fur-clad limbs
This is the time
For tennis balls
And Hot Dogs…

It is officially summer in the northern hemisphere. In England, the weather forecasters are predicting a heatwave. Every year many dogs die from heatstroke. They cannot regulate their body temperature in the same way a human can. Even just a ‘warm’ day can prove fatal… a parked car with an interior temperature of 22° C (71.6° F) may rise to 47° C ( 116.6° F) within an hour. Even with ventilation, dogs suffer and die.

It isn’t just dogs at risk. Protect your pets.

      1. Oh! My she is so slow, she usually tires me out with her rushing around. Do you know Ani she won’t get up to let me out however much I nose her. But I am being gentle with her as she is not herself!.. strange behaviour for my two legs 💜💜💜

            1. 😀😀😀😀 she does, she usually sighs deeply at my art then for some strange reason gets the noise bag out and totally destroys it….. Plain ungrateful? 💜💜💜

  1. A timely message, Ani. Make sure you chase your tennis ball after dusk! Not a lot of people know that dogs don’t sweat like humans. I often stop and talk to runners with their dogs on hot days.

  2. Another message that needs to be in the national papers. People don’t realise how dangerous the heat is for dogs, so well said. I’m dreading the heatwave, my worst time of year, so I can imagine how you feel about it too. Another period to endure. Stay safe, and stay cool. 🙂

  3. Thank you so much for sharing this. It is a very important topic. I started my DOG blog to raise awareness to these types of issues as well. Furthermore, I believe that we can take many important lessons from dogs, such as unconditional love and loyalty. I am looking forward to meeting more dog/animal lovers. 🙂

Let's talk!
